Prepping Senior Loved Ones for a Family Reunion

grandparents_family_reunion-LRFamily reunions are exciting opportunities for the entire family to get together. Chances are, your senior loved one is eagerly awaiting your summer reunion. Before you head off, however, it's important to make sure that you take the right steps to properly prepare your loved one.

Step One: Check the Destination

When you're heading off for a family reunion with a senior loved one, make sure that you take the time to check the destination. Will you be somewhere with easily accessible indoor facilities, or is the entire family reunion going to take place outside in the sun? If you're going to be out of town, do you know the locations of local hospitals and other important areas? Become familiar with the city where you'll be traveling so that you aren't blindsided.

Step Two: Prepare the Right Clothes

For seniors, sun protection is particularly important. If you're going to be outside for most of your family reunion, make sure that they have cool, lightweight clothes that will provide coverage from the sun. Sunglasses, a hat, and other key accessories will also help make the outing more enjoyable.

Step Three: Take Along Proper Hydration Materials

Keeping your senior well hydrated is also a critical stage in the process. Take along a water bottle or a few bottles of your loved one's favorite cool beverage. Keep in mind that soda and tea can be dehydrating; water and sports drinks are a better choice. Encourage your loved one to regularly drink a little bit to prevent dehydration.

Step Four: Prepare Healthy Snacks

Are you serving food at your family reunion? Even if you're planning for there to be plenty of food available, it's important that you take along a few healthy snacks. They can keep your loved one nourished and energized even if there's a delay before the food is ready or the food that's being prepared isn't to their liking. If they have special health concerns, like diabetes or a low-sodium diet, make sure that there will be dishes that meet their needs.

If you're not available to provide the care your senior needs during a family reunion or you have more questions about what they might need, contact us. We'll work with you to ensure that your loved one has the right level of care at this important event.
